Toyota Tundra Truck When Stopped on Hill and Stopped It Rolls Back

  1. Hi all. New here and seeking your knowledge.

I wanted to test out the possible hill assist with my 2018 platinum 4x4 so I parked on a slope that was enough to roll back a bit. When doing so the truck did nothing at first but about 20 feet into the backwards roll it did a noticeable jolt and then stopped. Then it seemed like the motor shut off. No throttle response and check engine light appeared. I turned the key into the off position. Started it up and I feel like it took a bit longer than normal to start. Truck then performed normal, then I put it into gear and a left.

any ideas? Does my tundra have a shut off feature like this. I should add that no check engine light remains once I restarted it.

    thank you

Tundras do not have hill assist. How were you letting it "roll backwards" ?

  3. I was on maybe a 10% grade in drive at a stop. Took my foot off to see if it had a hill assist and let it roll back a bit with nothing happening. Then the shutter and then the stall.

  4. Thanks for the read. Seems like It's "normal" ? Put me at ease a bit but still strange. I was just messing around with the truck to see what it could or couldn't do and I ended up scaring myself thinking I just messed up the truck after owning it for two days.
  5. I don't know what years have the hill start assist but this is from the manual in my 2021. Also a thing to note is that it helps when going from reverse to drive like when putting a boat in, I'm not so sure it helps when you are on a steep hill in drive and you let off the gas, I haven't tested that yet.

  6. Also this at the bottom.

But I don't think he was activating a start assist. I think he was already running and let it roll backwards. Truck probably shut itself off to protect itself and not tear anything up.

  7. Yeah, that's what I thought, that he just wasn't in the right conditions for it to activate.
  8. This happened to me as well, somewhat steep hill. I probably should have put the truck into [R] before backing up but I'm used to driving a stick shift and would naturally have the clutch pushed in.
  9. Thank you for the responses everyone.

That is insane. I'm looking inside my 1997 T100 for the buttons to engage all those features. But...........alas, nowhere to be found. Unless I overlooked. Here. You can look with me and tell me if I missed them.
