Broncos Td Called Back Agains Rams

Backup QB Lock throws go-ahead, second-half touchdown laissez passer every bit Broncos defeat competitive Rams reserves, 17-12.

DENVER — Through the get-go quarter, information technology appeared the Broncos' starters weren't quite with it.

Teddy Bridgewater and his receivers were misfiring or muffing, as the Broncos' newly anointed No. 1 quarterback was off to a backup-like, i-of-half dozen-for-4-one thousand start.

"He was loftier with his throws,'' said Broncos' head coach Vic Fangio. "At the showtime of the game we ran it skilful but we weren't throwing it good."

Denver's vaunted first-cord defense, meanwhile, was giving up yards and first downs to  the Los Angeles Rams' second- and third-string offense. Led by sometime Virginia quarterback Bryce Perkins, the Rams put together back-to-dorsum, 11-play, field goal drives against Denver's tiptop defenders.

"I wasn't at the time, but I'k glad they faced some adversity,'' Fangio said. "I'one thousand interested to see that (second) 11-play bulldoze on usa, I call back we were getting a little tired. Maybe our fatigue police has been doing a niggling too much policing. And we need to go these guys in better shape.''

The Broncos, who played their starters for 1 1/ii quarters, defeated the Rams, 17-12, in the preseason finale played on a warm (84 degrees at kickoff) late-August Saturday night earlier 52,478at Empower Field at Mile Loftier. The game ended with Perkins throwing an incomplete laissez passer into the terminate zone from the Broncos' 27.

The Broncos finished their preseason with a 3-0 record, although none of their opponents -- the Vikings, Seahawks and Rams -- played more than one or two starters.

"I think we've got a good team, and what I hateful by team is I think the guys are together, I think they take a good feeling almost each other, I retrieve they have a skillful feeling about our possibilities and that's important moving forward,'' Fangio said.

Surprisingly, the Rams backups were up, 6-iii early in the 2d quarter and it could accept been worse as Los Angeles had 7 showtime downs to Denver'due south 2.

Bridgewater would get one more chance to justify head coach Vic Fangio's decision to cull him over Drew Lock. And Teddy 2 Gloves delivered. Bridgewater completed 5 of 5 for 58 yards in his tertiary bulldoze, which was capped by an 8-g touchdown strike to receiver Courtland Sutton that put Denver ahead, ten-six in the second quarter.

Bridgewater and Sutton too continued for a 19-yard completion on the drive, an encouraging render to play by the receiver who had been out since trigger-happy an ACL in game two last season at Pittsburgh.

"Information technology was nice to be out in that location with the guys and be able to do it in front of Broncos State,'' Sutton said. "It was amazing to be able to see all the fans out there, hearing them cheering for us. Information technology gets you hyped for the regular season.''

Some other thespian making a comeback from ACL surgery, tight finish Albert Okwuegbunam, had three catches for 23 yards.

"It was just off a little chip tonight,'' Bridgewater said. "Information technology was one of those deals where as a quarterback I know I take Court out here for the first time, Big O, let me get these guys going. And if I had merely played within our organisation, throw the brawl to the guy that's open, you have success as a quarterback.

"Information technology's one of those deals where I'm just learning. If they call Court'south number and they're covered, hey, get to the next guy in the read."

Besides Sutton, who played but one one-half of football concluding year, star pass rusher Von Miller returned for his beginning game action since 2019. Miller tore an Achilles tendon six days prior to the season-opener concluding twelvemonth and missed the entire flavor.

He had iii tackles and a quarterback hurry during a fairly active three series of work.

"When you're in rehab all yous recall about is, 'Man, tin can't look to play football, can't wait to play football,''' Miller said. "And so when you get out there you lot really don't think nearly information technology. It'south almost the next play. Yous don't really reverberate on rehab and stuff merely I did kind of wait up and have in the type of environs nosotros have here in Broncos Land. We had 53,000 fans here. Last year, we didn't have any (because of COVID-19 restrictions). It only felt really, really good to be back in the stadium with all the guys. It was a great day."

Perkins led the Rams on his first bulldoze of the 2nd half, but the Denver defense, which didn't allow a touchdown in the preseason, stiffened in the red zone. A fourth field goal by Matt Gay gave Los Angeles a 12-10 lead midway through the third quarter.

Lock answered on the next drive past going 4 of 4 for 55 yards with a 7-yard touchdown pass to tight cease A.J. Fort. That put the Broncos up, 17-12.

Bridgewater finished his preseason by completing 22 of 30 passes for 241 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. His adjacent game volition be the season-opener Sept. 12 against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Lock was 19 of 28 for 298 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions and a 138.7 rating. Corking for someone who lost the QB competition. Make no fault, Lock is not done.

Brandon McManus continued his strong kick as he nailed a 54-grand field goal to end off the Broncos' first drive. He was 5 of 5 in field goals, with makes from 52 and 54 yards, and 8 of 8 in 33-yard actress points, this preseason.

The Rams got a third field goal from Matt Gay belatedly in the first one-half when defensive lineman Michael Hoecht vanquish correct tackle Cam Fleming on a stunt and stripped-sack Lock. Hoecht recovered the bollix inside the Broncos' 20, setting up Gay's curt field goal on the final play of the half.

For many players, the game would mark the terminal time on the Broncos' agile roster. The team must cut its roster from 80 players to 53 by two p.thousand. Tuesday.

"I don't know what our final listing is going to wait like, yet,'' Fangio said. "George (Paton, the Broncos' general manager) and I have talked about it but (Sun) will be the real talk.''

The regular season is next on the schedule. The Broncos open up against the New York Giants, who were 6-10 last year, at MetLife Stadium in New Bailiwick of jersey on Sept. 12, a weekend that volition marking the 20th ceremony of ix-11.
